The Personal Computer (TM)
This course is an introduction to computers, their early beginnings in the 1960's, evolution in the '70's and '80's. Exponential growth through the 90's with the advent of The Internet in the 00's and rapid rise in Web Search Engines and Social Media platforms and and advance
Did you know that The Personal Computer (TM) is a trademark of IBM ? Unfortunately, IBM was not keen on sharing this new technology with other industrial partners much like the Apple Business model is today. However, the power of personal computing was recognised by competitors and derivatives or similar personal computers were developed and presented to the wider consumer markets. In other words, IBM missed an opportunity to conquer the world of computers even though they maintained an edge in this industry for some time. Particularly in the Enterprise domains such as Banking and industrial business processing needs of the computing world.
Back in the days, computers were large installations that took up whole buildings before they began being taken up by businesses to process data but they created a lot of heat, were not efficient and there were few people who knew how to operate them.
In the early days Computer Programmers were busy feeding Punched Cards that resemble QR Codes do today, only punched cards were literally hardened paper with tiny holes in them. These were fed into machines that could read and initiate different processes based on information such as ADD, SUBTRACT and FIND THE SQUARE ROOT OF some numbers. There were of course no calculators in those days.. Technology was still waiting for such innovation and inventions.
